I don't think BYU cares to "serve Utah's interests".
They want to play competitive and enjoyable football games. I guess if you couldn't care less that a century old rivalry dies because you feel that it must so that Utah can try to calculate their way into a Rose Bowl, then more power to you. Weird reasoning but hey you're a Ute fan . I like to watch good football and games that have history and tradition to them. I think that's what BYU fans and I guess half of "Ute nation" want to continue to see as well. It looks like Utah administration has gotten over their petty little move and decided to give the people what they want. For now.
