Even under Lavell, almost every year had an unexplainable loss where all during the call in show Lavell would talk about how the team just came out flat. Go back and look at the history, without pre-conceived notions of how great it was. Look at the losses that just don't fit. Last year winning at Texas was as good as anything Lavell did. Lavell followed up a national championship with a loss to a 1 win team. He lost a lot of big games, he won a lot of big games. Bronco has a very similar record with much harder competition. The MWC was much better and deeper than the WAC of the 70's-90's.

The biggest issue BYU fans of today have is Ute jealousy. They were invited to the party and we were not, so every mistake is magnified 100x's because Utah has found some success and our fans take that personally.
