We (HCBH & I) both worked in the U.S. senate early in our marriage.
We were often expected to go to The Hawk & Dove after work to collaborate or strategize with staffers from other offices on co sponsored bills. We just figured we'd stay as long as the topic was professional and drink our soda. Once people got a little too much alcohol and the subject changed, we figured they wouldn't remember too clearly how long we were there & we left. Some more straight liners would find that sinful to even be there but it worked and was totally necessary. I think your take could make sense. However, what kind of lynching would there be if any BYU official were seen cocktailing even if not drinking themselves? Rock & hard place it seems.
