I think for all of us there's a balancing point. Now granted, I'm sure you can find an example or two of someone who
doesn't come because they are terrified to be around where alcohol is served. But those aren't even close to a plurality of members. It's a time management issue for me. I have obligations outside of work. I have to prioritize those. When there's a legitimate reason (including hobnobbing with the right people) to go out to one of these events, I am happy to do so. When it's just some random folks going out to drink--I'll usually pass. I want to be a team player. I spend enough working hours at work that asking me to sacrifice additional time away from my family strikes me as something that deserves some thoughtful consideration.
