have to pay big fees to "play" on private lands or there IS no public land.
All of the hunters I've spoken too out east "know someone" who has large tracks of land they can hunt on. I know absolutely zero people who actually hunt on public land, when I inquired about it, they said there was none.

Don't let the Utah Propoganda Machine mis-inform you. This is not about public access, it's about privatizing land for grazing/mining.
Can you imagine recreating in the west desert if people like the Bundy's actually owned the land? You'd get shot before you even knew you were trespassing...
