I didn't have illusions of grandeur about college sports
but my freshman roommate did. He was black, and he thought that fact alone would guarantee him a spot as a walk-on for the basketball team. He could talk good trash, and he was somewhat quick and could pick my pocket a few times a game, but I didn't make a 5A high school team in Utah, so I was nothing special.
He went to a tryout and jacked up some threes and didn't say anything about making the team again.
There was a time when I though if I made my millions, retired at 50, trained and played golf exclusively for 5 years or whatever that I could get myself qualified for the senior PGA tour. I no longer believe that to be the case.
