ImuaKahuku Walk-on
My freshman year in HS, I was playing spring ball with the varsity. I was in as
a FS on a play and Lakei Heimuli was in at RB. Of course I was lined up 10-12 yards back on the weak side A gap. I remember seeing the NT and DE disappear then the two MLB's and a hole form big enough for a marching band to get through. I started praying the QB would keep the ball (it was the veer option that we ran 99.9% of the time) but to my desperate horror he gave him the ball. I stood my ground and accepted my fate just waiting and hoping that maybe he would get his foot stuck in my face-mask and trip or something. He ran right at me and just when he got to me he stopped and tapped his helmet on mine and then ran back to the huddle. Needless to say I was forever thankful.
On a side note. It's kind of funny how similar the love for KHS football on the North Shore is to fans for BYU. Many of us from there love both with the same passion. A couple of years ago, in the state final, St Louis was heavily favored even though they had a loss and Kahuku was undefeated. The support from the community was just like the support for BYU. In the end Kahuku won. One reporter nailed it when they wrote, and I feel this could be said for BYU football, "one team (StL) was playing for a state championship, the other team (KHS) was playing for a community". I feel like BYU football plays for us, the community, more than for anything else.
