guy from the USU football team.
I was about 5'9" and 140 lbs at the time so I wasn't going to over power anyone, but I thought I was pretty dang quick and shifty and had played on the rugby team so I thought I was at least a decent athlete.
One of the guys playing was a walk-on with the practice squad but was on injured reserve or something. Basically, he was only sort of loosely associated with a bad USU football team and would never see any playing time. He was about 6'2" 270 ish and was a D lineman. I knew I didn't want him getting a clean shot on me but figured I'd have no problem out running him in open space since he was some big scrub.
At one point during the game I caught a slant over the middle and he was the only guy that was going to get even close to getting me so I started running down field at about 3/4 speed thinking it would be an easy score. I looked over my shoulder and he was about to get me so I picked up the pace to full speed and he was on my heels for 20 yards and if anything gained ground on me after I picked it up to full speed. I was only 18 at the time and it was right then that I realized that I wasn't as fast as I thought I was and that D1 athletes are on a completely different level than I was if some practice squad lineman could run as fast or faster than I could.
