The standards are MUCH lower. I know this directly from current athletes. There are not a few athletes that are the "exception and special circumstances", the vast majority are getting in due to athletics. BYU's standards may be minimally higher than the NCAA rules but if so it is not by much. Not sure where he came up with the info, certainly a hit to credibility.
There are schools that have much higher admissions standards than BYU and the rest of the NCAA.....Stanford, ND, Duke, Northwestern etc. Even these schools have lowered admissions to let their athletes in. Look at ND, they annually have kids that don't make it in but these kids end up at other top tier programs and they annually have current student athletes that are ruled ineligible that don't 'make grades no matter what they did not the field the year prior. BYU does not do this in a similar vein, they do monitor and watch grades but not in same ballpark as the school mentioned.
BYU does have some incredible student athletes that could get in nearly anywhere on their own. That is not the norm.
