It's an interesting hypothetical: what if BYU had remained in the MWC?

For 2011, the MWC still adds Boise St. and keeps the conference at 9 members after Utah leaves.

TCU left after the 2011 season. Who does the MWC add to move to 12 teams for the 2012 season? My bet is that SJSU is left behind - and the MWC adds Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, and Utah St. How would the MWC align its divisions?

How would BYU's 2011-2017 football teams have done in the realigned MWC?

2011TCU (11-2, 7-0) and Boise St. (12-1, 6-1) were pretty good in 2011 - and TCU actually beat us in Arlington that year. So, we finish no better than 2nd in the MWC and 9-3, with MWC 3rd and 8-4 a possibility, depending on how we do against Boise. Not much difference than the status quo.

2012 - We lose to Boise St.(7-1) and SJSU, but beat Hawaii and Utah St. May be there is a MWC CCG if we remain...and may be we play against Boise St. if we are in opposite divisions. Likely don't play Notre Dame or one of Oregon St. or Georgia Tech in the OOC. So, may be 9-3, if we go 3-1 in the OOC and 6-2 in the MWC. May be play Rice in the Armed Forces Bowl or SMU in the Hawaii Bowl instead of SDSU in the Poinsettia?

2013 -  We beat Boise St. (6-2 in MWC), Utah St.(7-1), and Nevada (3-5). So, we likely win our MWC division and play Fresno St. in the MWC championship - with a good shot to win. That means the early December conference championship game and USC in the Las vegas Bowl - with an outside shot to play in the Fiesta Bowl against Baylor (instead of UCF); it would have been *possible* if we go 3-1 in OOC with a loss to Utah and wins against say Texas, Georgia Tech, and Idaho St. This looks like a better result than the 2013 independent team, although we did play Washington in our bowl game.

2014 - We lose to Boise St.(7-1) - who went on to win the MWC CCG and play Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl. We also lost to Utah St. (6-2) and Nevada(4-4), and beat UNLV (1-7). A decent shot at 4-0 in the OOC though, so may be we finish 9-3 or 8-4. May be play Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl a year early (or twice in a row?). If not, not likely to get a better bowl game than Memphis in Miami Beach.

2015 - We beat Boise St.(5-3), Utah St.(5-3), SJSU (4-4) and Fresno St.(2-6). So, a decent shot to win our MWC division and play in the MWC CCG. We likely *still* play Utah in Las Vegas, so not much different about the season except for probably 1 or 2 fewer P5 opponents and no AAC opponents.

2016 - We lose a close one at Boise. OOC could have been 1-3 or 3-1, depending on who we played with our 4 OOC games. Not likely better than 9-3. Probably a similar win-loss record, but definitely 2 or 3 fewer P5 opponents. May be get a better opponent in the Poinsettia Bowl - Navy or Army?

2017 - We *may be* finish with a little better win-loss record. We went 3-3 against the MWC last year. Let's say we go 1-3 OOC with a win over Portland St. and then the 3 September losses to LSU, Utah, and Wisconsin. We have a *chance* to finish bowl eligible if we beat 2 more MWC teams. But, in reality, which other MWC teams could BYU really have beaten (other than the MWC teams it faced) and who would BYU have played? So, may be 5-7 intead of 4-9...?

Looking ahead, we would likely have a better perspective for the upcoming season. In the OOC, we likely only play Utah and one of Arizona, Washington or Wisconsin on the road. Then, California and perhaps NMSU at home. Even with three P5s on the schedule, we would have an optimist's chance at 4-0 in the OOC and the MWC title. Just win our games. Home schedule of California, Utah St., Hawaii, NMSU and may be Air Force and SDSU. I don't think people would complain about our home schedule as much. And, we would start the year with a realistic chance at an NY6 bowl game and at least the Las Vegas Bowl against a PAC 12 opponent if we fall just short.

2019 might see Utah and Washington or USC at home, along with Boise St., and say Fresno St., Nevada, and New Mexico. Again, the realistic chance at the NY6 and Las Vegas Bowl every year.
