Some thoughts
Shaming should never occur. I speak parents about their sons and have hoped that BYU would offer and that they would choose BYU, but I will wish him the best even if he ends up at Utah (I just won't cheer for them).

Does going to BYU represent the best way to showcase your religion? Yes, I believe this is true. Jabari Parker coming out of college was a better pro prospect than Jimmer, yet in terms of impact on the Mormon faith everyone knows and remembers Jimmer. That being said an athlete may not want to showcase their religion. That is their decision.

BYU fans will always be disappointed when a top Mormon recruit chooses someone other than BYU. That will never change. That is like a top player in Alabama going to Georgia. It would disappoint Tide fans (I'm guessing they would be more negative and brutal than any BYU fans would be). Why? Well because they want to keep their own with them (in their case Geographically in our case Theologically).

Unfortunately there will be disappointment no matter where a young talented player goes. This will always be the case. When that player is a practicing Mormon it will be among the BYU fan base.
