Talk about strawmen...
Every coach you mention did not have to deal with the current state of college football or the academic restrictions BYU is under now.

Gary Crowten was almost 20 years ago. Utah didn't join PAC-12 until 2011. Power 5 autonomy didn't happen until 2014. The academic standards at BYU started ramping up during Bronco's time... but got exponentially brutal his last few years. Kalani made it worse his first year by pushing players through academics that eventually flunked out. Two years into Kalani's time they made it so Kalani and the AD now have to petition admission for players that don't qualify. Due to the difficulty, they only attempt to get 1 or 2 kids every year as exceptions.

Your 'Strawmen' argument falls apart because the BYU of today is not the BYU of 5 years ago. Collage football is nothing like football in the 2000's.

The blind fans are the fans that can't accept the true challenges. No coach is going to succeed at BYU in the current environment.

PS. The stadium locker rooms are updated all the time. They actually remodeled the back shower area before the season started. The locker rooms will not be renovated/changed anytime soon... due to tradition. During visits, recruits are taken into the stadium locker room and are told (paraphrasing) 'This is the house Lavell built. Steve Young suited-up in that locker, Jim McMan used to sit here. Ty Detmer, Robbie Bosco, Max Hall all have bled in this room'. The stadium locker room is a sacred place for the BYU players.
