fans expect us to win more than 50% of our games. An you call that a strawman argument? As has been pointed out over and over in this thread, nobody expects our team to go out and be Alabama every year. We do, however, expect our coaches to be able to figure out how to prepare the team so that we can beat Toledo, UMass, NIU, etc.
I don't give a crap what's happened in the P12 or in the CFB playoff structure. Let's agree on the proposition that changes in the college football landscape have made things tougher for programs that are not in a P5 league. Guess what? Every G5 team and team like BYU who isn't in a P5 league faces those same disadvantages. Those disadvantages you're citing as excuses why BYU is doing as good as it can don't excuse coaches failing against Umass, NIU, Toledo, USU, East Carolina, and Fresno type teams. Those are teams that have even greater disadvantages than BYU due to the "changing landscape of College Football."
