comparison. BYU is a heavily subsidized religious school that is exclusive (in a good way) due to community college tuition rates and atmosphere. BYU is focused on undergrad and getting couples married and sending them off to a good graduate school. Utah is an inclusive state school (with lower instate tuition) that serves the needs of locals with a much heavier emphasis on research and graduate programs. BYU's religious mission and policies makes it a primary destination location for out-of-state Mormons and an undesirable pariah to groups such as the PAC12 or even the BIG12. Utah has a goal to join prestigious groups such as the AAU & PAC12. BYU's lack of research will forever keep it out of the AAU. Both schools are good in their own way. I foresee the differences between the 2 schools increasing in the near and long term future.
