For 2019 U.S. News ranked BYU 57th in the country and the U of U ranked 146th.
It's no surprise that with BYU being ranked by outside sources as the best school in the state that many bright students would prefer to stay close to home and go to BYU instead of paying exorbitant tuition at Yale or Princeton and moving half-way across the country. So yes, BYU has the highest quality of students in the state by admission metrics, and that's because it is rated by outside sources as the best academic institution in the state.
