The Dept of HHS and USDA completes a meta-analysis every five years
Of the best science available and breaks things into tiers: strong evidence, moderate evidence and limited evidence. The best science as of the last five years is consistent with the 89th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Prioritize nutrient-rich whole grains (‘staff of life’) & vegetables (‘wholesome herbs’*). Limit fatty meats/poultry.

At the end of the day, there is a high correlation between calorie deficit/surplus and weight gain. The wide availability of sugars/simple carbohydrates, fatty meats and fats lead to excess calorie consumption. Employment continues to skew away from manual activity.

*Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines ‘herb’: A plant or vegetable with a soft or succulent stalk or stem, which dies to the root every year, and is thus distinguished from a tree and a shrub
