While attending graduate school we (wife and 9 month to toddler aged daughter) lived in New Jersey. We had twins just before moving back to Utah (just over a week before moving back to Utah). The twins were 8 lbs. 9oz. and 7 lbs. 9oz. - that is over 16 pounds of baby. More than the combined weight of septuplets, octuplets, etc. My wife when riding subways or walking in Manhattan at 37-39 weeks really turned heads. People in NYC make significant effort to not look at you, not notice you, just live in their own bubble. They failed at that when they saw my wife. Every subway we walked onto several people would stand up to offer her a seat... Not such a cool story now, but Bill Cosby spoke in my graduation ceremony. The branch we attended was very inner city. It included Newark, NJ and surrounding cities, East Orange, West Orange, part and then all of South Orange, Orange, Irvington, etc. Newark is a town devastated by race riots during the Vietnam War. Very strange to see massive, beautiful houses with large wooded lots that you could buy for a song. Large parts of the city that were filled with government projects that missionaries were generally not allowed to visit, because of the frequency of violence, murder and other crimes. It felt like the cities around Newark were in a competition to be more violent, more problematic than Newark. 2 new members of our branch were murdered. My wife was the RS president, so she was involved in one funeral and in charge of much of the other. One murder I never heard an explanation or reason. The kid was a recent immigrant from Africa with his family. He was the only member of the family that regularly attended church (after the funeral the family was all active). If I remember correctly he was walking to school at the university attended (maybe Rutgers, but not sure - about 25 years ago) and someone walked up and shot him point blank in the chest with a rifle or shotgun. A few months later a new convert had someone come up behind him and hit him on the head with something, intending to knock him out or knock him down. The guy had an undiagnosed brain tumor and died. This one was related to a drug debt. About this same time the son of a new convert was shot in the chest point blank with a rifle or shotgun, but survived. He was baptized after his recovery. We regularly saw drug deals. I home taught a guy that lived on one of the many streets where the pattern was basically: abandoned/ condemned house, vacant lot where the condemned house was torn down, house that should be condemned, but like 5-8 families are living in it. He lived on the 3rd floor of one of those houses that should be condemned. He worked late, so I would visit him after dark in an all black neighborhood (I am white). The light in the stairs did not work and several of the stairs were missing, so walking up the stairs in the dark was scary. Not as scary as walking up to the house, especially the first time. There was always a large group of high school aged boys sitting on the entry stairs, doing/ selling/ buying drugs or just talking, depending on the day. The first few visits they looked at me with an "are you crazy cracker?" expression, sometimes actually expressing that thought. After a few visits they were used to me.

After we moved back to Utah our dentist was Dr. Payne and pediatrician was Dr. Hacking. Fun names... Years ago local and national news was regularly and constantly reporting on the below murder case. In the reporting it was mentioned that the murderer's father was a doctor. A few weeks after the murder my wife took the kids to their annual Well Baby visit, but the doctor was out for "family issues" and a different doctor handled the visit. As we discussed this odd coincidence (same last name as a murderer, who's father is a doctor and the doctor is out with family issues...) we decided Dr. Hacking was likely (later confirmed, but he retired soon after the incident) the father of the murderer.

Other people have mentioned suicides... My son had 3 friends commit suicide within a few months. One close friend, one casual friend and one acquaintance through his acting class, plays, etc. The close friend, my son and another boy all have the same name and birthdays within a month, so they all went by last names. There was a 4th boy with the same name a year or so older. I knew no one with that name when our son was born, but only one cousin with a derivative of the name. The close friend was the grandson of Dr. Payne, our dentist. I went camping with the friend and his dad and my son (and the other boy with the same name) several times. A little before the friend took his life, his dad, the son-in-law of Dr. Payne took his life as well. Really hard times for that family.
