Sorry but you’re downplaying the Sunday play issue.
Yes Baylor has a scandal and frankly they are jerks but none of those are issues moving forward. And I agree with you regarding same sex marriage.

Eliminating one day of the week to schedule sports events is a deal breaker in every sport outside of football. If there were a Jewish or Muslim university that couldn’t schedule games on Saturday it would be a huge inconvenience and they would be similarly treated.

When I moved to DC as a kid, little league baseball games went from being played tues/Sat in California to Wed/Sun in DC. I joined the team and played every Wed and didn’t go on Sundays, because that’s the way it had always been. I didn’t ask for special considerations, I do remember my dad taking me out of church for the championship game which was played in Sunday (and we lost anyway).

The point is that if you believe the Ten Commandments require you to not play on Sunday, sometimes being “different” and standing out from the world requires taking a stand and being lonely, not having everyone else change to your standards. It would be nice if the Big 12 bent over backwards to support Sunday play, but it is a huge deal and huge inconvenience. Bishop Edgely gave a talk about a young LDS person who refused to go to an R rated movie with her friends. The “Friend” version of the story would be that they were so impressed with her stance that they went to Bambi with her and were converted to the gospel. In reality, they threw the money and tickets in her face and left her alone to go see the movie they wanted. BYU is that girl.

And I am active LDS but saying “it’s one of the Ten Commandments” is a tad dismissive. The commandment is “to keep the sabbath day holy,” different people have different interpretations. For example, when my dad was a missionary on Sundays the missionaries stayed home and read scriptures all day because proselytizing and knocking on doors wasn’t keeping the sabbath day holy. Then the church made it clear in the handbook that you should be out contacting and teaching (which is important because so many people are home with their families on sundays).

Personally I believe that honorable young men and women wearing the BYU uniform with pride on Sunday and playing a game is still keeping it holy. And keep in mind that active LDS players at every other university play on Sundays when those games are scheduled. At the very least individuals should be given the opportunity to decide for themselves and play or sit if they want.
