My point is that there probably wasn't any more racist sentiment at BYU than most of the country as a whole, yet, BYU gets singled out as some sort of racist anomaly while the rest of the country looked on in horror. It simply isn't an accurate depiction.

Yeah, BYU had some idiosyncracies but i don't recall hearing about separate drinking fountains at the chapels or blacks having to receive sacrament at the back door. I'd argue that the church was much less racist than the average prevailing sentiments of the country. There was still plenty of institutional, overt, and covert racism throughout the 70's across the US in many institutions (mostly privatized).

Was every US citizen in the 70's a racist? Of course not.
