Looking at the 100 largest universities in the US, BYU is #98 in diversity
#99 is BYU-Idaho. #100 is Auburn.

There are 9 schools (among the 100 largest) that are over 80% white.

These include
#92 Utah State University
#94 Utah Valley University
#98 BYU
#99 BYU-Idaho

BYU is still only 1% black. There's an unfortunate de facto segregation that happens there.

I'm not going to speculate on reasons for it or even who is at fault for it, but it's an unfortunate reality that something is preventing black students from attending BYU (and Utah schools in general) in line with what would be expected.

Part of that is obviously that Utah has a very small black population to begin with, but given that BYU draws so much from out-of-state, that should be somewhat mitigated. Unfortunately, there are also not proportionally many black members of the church. This could be a result of many things, including the Priesthood ban, or numerous statements from first presidency and other general authorities in the 50s and 60s that

"No special effort has ever been made to proselyte among the Negro race, and social intercourse between the Whites and the Negroes should certainly not be encouraged because of leading to intermarriage, which the Lord has forbidden. This move which has now received some popular approval of trying to break down social barriers between the Whites and the Blacks is one that should not be encouraged because inevitably it means the mixing of the races if carried to its logical conclusion."

Or various other quotes from general authorities of the time about "preserving the purity of the white race" or that ""the whole negro race have been cursed with a black skin, the mark of Cain, so they can be identified as a caste apart, a people with whom the other descendants of Adam should not intermarry."

I get that those are all historical at this point, but they still have influences. We talk about the 1984 championship like it matters for conference expansion... but a priesthood ban from only six years earlier is ancient history and shouldn't be considered or relevant in any way
