I think you're blaming the wrong people...
Hating the tow truck drivers is like hating the police because you don't like a law. The blame for the ugly towing practices in Provo lands squarely on the shoulders of apartment managers who invite the tow truck drivers to patrol their lots, and the students who refuse to follow parking regulations. I get it, people get booted and towed for ridiculous things and sometimes for not having done anything at all, but if students consistently followed parking regulations, towing wouldn't be a profitable job and these companies would go away.

When I was a student at BYU I once got booted because I didn't have a parking pass for my new apartment complex. The management group ran out of stickers for people moving in and told all of us to go ahead and park without a permit and it would be okay. Well, I got a boot because management failed to communicate with the towing company. 18 of us got boots. We called the towing company and the driver came right back. He said he was completely willing to take them off for free if the manager told him he could, but that his contract wouldn't let him take them off without the go ahead from the property manager. He waited while we called the property manager, who refused to tell him to take off the boots. The driver was as frustrated as we were. The bad guy here wasn't the driver, but the property manager (who was a real piece of work).

And it's ridiculous to think there's something wrong with them as people. Good grief, if I lost my job I would do whatever it took to continue feeding my family, even if it was working as a tow truck driver, and my guess is most people on this board would too. I so much prefer people who are willing to do a horrible job than the lazy idiots in our country who sit around all day watching TV collecting welfare because they refuse to work anything other than their ideal job.
