It's an awful big decision to a believing member of the Church. I've been
involved with quite a few cases of people having their names removed. Very few of them treated it as much bigger of a deal than canceling a Columbia House membership. If they truly don't believe that the Church is true, then the only real benefit of removing their name is that they will no longer be harassed by hometeachers or missionaries.

Heck, in one case, the person asked if they could still come to the occasional activity and such if they removed their names. When told they could, they were very quick to sign the form. These people didn't have anything against the church, they just viewed their baptism as a rash decision they made in their youth.

Many people raised in the Church feel the same way. To them, their membership was always just something they had because, when they were 8, their parents took them to the chapel to get baptized. I knew someone like that at BYU. He wanted to have his name removed so that he could then fall under the non-Mormon rules. I don't know if he ever did it or not and I have no idea what the consequences were if he did. This topic is making me wonder about him, though.
