I think the difference is automatic expulsion with a chance to be exempt versus
A chance to be heard first before any decisions are made. I'm fine with the idea of having a serious but also polite and cordial discussion with the student to understand the circumstances and provide them with a clear understanding of what they must do (and not do) in order to stay at BYU and let them decide if they want to stay under those conditions. If they say yes, they MUST hold up their end of deal or face expulsion. If they don't like the conditions, then we thank them for their time and contributions to the University and warmly wish them the best in their future endeavors.
