Unfortunately, in this case, my understanding is some dumb member of the Provo police turned the woman in, and then the woman herself went public with the accusation...which makes me suspicious. Unless the cop made it public already, why would she want to go public other than for sympathy from the public and the press (see NYT)?
Still, I understand that she may be absolutely telling the truth. But we do not know at this point, and may never know. Your story of your roommate is a classic example of the other side.
