understood, I'm just sharing common viewpoints....
...from across the aisle, not defending any in particular. I know BYU has had their share of major gaffs like "the onside kick", number one amongst ute fans (at least old timers) likely is the 1977 game where Edwards decided to put Marc Wilson back in late in the 4th Q of a 38-8 blowout Cougar win over a hapless Utah team so he could set an NCAA passing record for passing yards in a game (571).

In hindsight we shouldn't have done that and Edwards should have considered that records are only temporary and that record has been broken numerous times since so nothing really was gained except the UofU taking their end of the rivalry to an unprecedented level of hatred (The incident infuriated Utah head coach Wayne Howard. After the game he said, "This today will be inspiring. The hatred between BYU and Utah is nothing compared to what it will be. It will be a crusade to beat BYU from now on. This is a prediction: in the next two years Utah will drill BYU someday, but we wont run up the score even if we could set an NCAA record against them.")

I can't say for certain that this single event changed the rivalry to the ugly level it is today (I was in Jr high and didn't live in Utah to see it) but I'm sure it was a major factor.

There are Cougar fans who also root for Kyle and the Utes when they're not playing BYU because Kyle is an all-time great in BYU football history and a significant link in the chain of a significant accomplishment (1984 National Championship). For a lot of others though this is difficult to swallow.

My perspective is that he's not as traitorous as some Y fans make him out to be and not as saintly as maybe some Ute fans make him out to be. I think he's a really good coach and among the best when it comes to preparing his teams for winning a big game.
