that's my biggest critique
I agree wholeheartedly with that. I remember reading a pre-game interview a couple years back (iirc) before either the Yewt game or the TCU game where Bronco was asked if he had worked on a special game plan for the rival after several consecutive bad games against them and his response was that BYU doesn't gameplan for opponents and they just prepare for everyone the same and rely on superior execution and assignment knowledge to beat their opponents.

Now I know that occasionally he'll go all out for an opponent (he did for Oklahoma in '09 and UCLA in '08) but I wished he took that same approach against bitter rivals like Utah and (when we played them) TCU. I think deep down inside he doesn't want to admit to himself that right now both programs are better than his and he HAS to do some extra planning to try and close the gap. He's definitely a proud guy.

I'd love to see more killer instinct, especially when we get out to a small lead in the Utah games. It seems like in games we've won vs Utah, we get out to a small lead through 2 1/2 to 3 quarters (maybe 10+ pts) and then the coaches take their foot off the gas and they start playing conservation mode like they're trying to protect the lead rather than extend it. That's always when Utah increases their efforts and next thing you know they've put together a couple long scoring drives and taken the lead and we have to resort to a last minute miracle to pull out a win in a game where we should have pulled away and won big.

2006, 2007 and 2009 were all that same script. In the 2008 game we started running the ball and closed on their big lead by midway through the 3rd quarter and were down 24-27 with the ball and momentum. If we had continued running the ball until they showed they could stop it, I believe we would've won that game.

Instead, Max goes beserk and single-handedly gift-wraps the game for Utah with his 4 or 5 turnovers deep in our own end that turned a close but winnable game into an embarrassing rout. To be honest, I don't know if that's all on Max for audibling out of the called running plays because he wanted to win the game with his arm or all on Robert Anae for inexplicably quitting the running game which had been working to go back to the passing attack which had been a disaster, or if it is some of both. I've never heard anyone with any knowledge share any insight on that one.
