Hawaii already has rivalry embers and gives BYU a great advantage for scheduling games during Week 0. If it were me, I would move the Hawaii home game to Week 0 every other year (using Hawaii's flexibility that year) and then the game at Hawaii in November...and then move one of BYU's home games to Week 0.
We want games in Texas. TCU would be the best get, but probably wouldn't go for an annual rivalry game. Houston currently has a better football program, but SMU might be the better "rival" because of the religious school connection and the Miracle Bowl history....play McMahon's clip every time SMU visits Provo!
Keep playing the PAC California teams and SDSU for frequent (annual?) games in California and the Arizona schools and UNLV for frequent games in Arizona and Las Vegas.
Schedule template:
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER
- Hawaii
- Utah
- PAC (mostly CA and AZ schools)
- B1G/SEC/ACC
- Add'l PAC or AAC/MAC
OCTOBER
- Utah St.
- MWC (SDSU/UNLV) or AAC/MAC
- FCS
- Boise St.
NOVEMBER
- B1G/SEC/ACC
- Liberty/UMass/NMSU/Army
- SMU/Houston
- at PAC (USC or Stanford)
That gives us a national schedule with 5-6 P5 opponents each year (ensure at least two P5's at home plus either Boise St. and SMU or Utah St. and Hawaii) and five annual opponents.
