Knee jerk implies a reflexive, mostly unthinking emotional response.
With BYU, they had contemplated independence a few times over the decades.
They had a vision for BYU Broadcasting that included BYU Sports as a BIG component.
Relations with the MWC (the conference office and many of the schools) and TV partners had reached the breaking point. We had even hired an outside law firm to explore litigation against both.
When our long-time conference mate left, I think that was simply the catalyst for the change. "Well, no point sticking around this sorry-butt conference any longer. Lets see if ESPN is interested in us." Maybe its semantics, but to me it wasn't knee jerk reaction but simply the catalyst for the change. A change I was actually against at the time but subsequently have come to believe was the right move--even if it didn't bring about a P5 invite as hoped.
