If BYU had been exploring and considering this for some time, and believed it was a viable option but the variables had just not previously added up to independence until Utah left, then it wouldn't really be a knee-jerk decision even if Utah was the impetus. I'm not saying those facts are accurate, but that seems to be what he's saying.
