Because of LDS missions, BYU coaches should have at least 2 extra years
of patience from fans to see how their system and recruiting is really going to pan out. The reality is that recruiting starts during high school during sophomore and junior years. Then we wait for them to graduate. Then for some players we wait an extra 2 years longer than most schools before the coaches really get to work with them due to the LDS mission which we want them to do. They come home after missions and have to be reconditioned for football, learn the coach's program, and start to mature into the program. They might redshirt for a year. The best players are almost always going to be the juniors and seniors on the team. How long does it take a BYU player to get from junior year of high school, to junior year at college? Let's say we recruit them as a junior.

For an athlete that serves an LDS mission:
1. High School Senior
2. LDS mission year 1 (or Redshirt)
3. LDS mission year 2
4. Redshirt
5. Freshman
6. Sophomore
7. Junior

For an athlete that does not serve an LDS mission:
1. High School Senior
2. Redshirt
3. Freshman
4. Sophomore
5. Junior

This is why we need to be patient. Expecting a one to three year program turnaround is an unfair demand. Our coaches are way more invested in the program than we are as fans, and they want to win way more than we do. The disrespect that they have to endure, and that their families have to endure is degrading to our community, and in the case of BYU, degrading to our religion. The least we can do is give them time to develop the vision we hired them for, or we should not hire them in the first place.
