...he inherited a program that hadn’t beaten Utah in 7 yrs and had slipped to an almost level playing field with Utah St (prior to Bronco getting blown out in 2010 by a 4 win Utah St team, BYU hadn’t lost to the Ags since ‘93 iirc). It was also a program that had lost 3 consecutive bowl games.

The team KS inherited had a thin veneer of talent on the surface (seniors in 2016) that once gone left very little talent in reserve to carry the program on.

Bronco by contrast inherited a program LOADED with NFL talent and some of the greatest players to ever play at BYU, guys who left the program as all-time leaders at their positions. Many of these guys were battled hardened after playing the #11th toughest SOS in 2004 and the #14th toughest in 2003 and were primed and loaded for bear by the time he took over in 2005. Beck was a junior QB already with 2 yrs of starting experience and he was throwing or handing off the ball to NFL receivers and running backs while protected by largely an NFL OL.

No other BYU HC in my lifetime (goes back beyond Lavell) EVER walked into the job with that much talent on board, experienced and ready to go. Bronco walked into a cake situation and one that was easily several orders of magnitude better than the ones Lavell or KS were handed.
