On one of your first points
about how long it took Lavell to win a bowl game...There was only 8 total bowl games through the 70's. During the 80's it started to increase to 15. The 90's saw an increase to 19. The 25 in the 2000's. To the now 35+ now.
You had to be good to go back then. Pretty much only conference champs and a few other top schools could go. So BYU was playing some top caliber schools that had very good years often times in these bowls in the 70's.
This is not like the bowl streaks that some teams like to put their stake in now days as being special...
