A *significantly expanded* AAC could make sense

If we were to bring Boise State and Gonzaga and one or two others with us (SDSU and Air Force are likely the frontrunners), an all sports membership in the expanded AAC - that has real access to the playoff - is a no-brainer, in my book.

You trade a couple of marquee games against quality programs for lesser games, but those lesser games are likely more meaningful to the playoff hunt...and thus would likely still get quality coverage and exposure.

I think BYU in the expanded AAC could still schedule three P5 opponents in the non-conference schedule, and would also enjoy conference games with Boise State, SDSU, Houston, Navy, Memphis, UCF, Cincinnati, etc. Those schedules would actually be fairly competitive with status quo, with a lower top-end but a much more robust and exciting back-end.

Comparing the 2019 schedule to the hypothetical 2019 AAC schedule, we could still play Tennessee, USC, Utah and Utah State, and then enjoy Houston, Cincinnati, SDSU and Boise State in November....that's much better than finishing the season with Liberty, Idaho State, and UMass.
