Adding Tulane & Tulsa really hurt the potential of the conference
I know they were desperate to get to 12, but these schools are not good for the conference. Small private schools with little following are not good additions. Tulsa being semi-respectable in football is not a good reason to add them. And Tulane being located in a decent market is not enough reason to add them. ECU, for all its flaws, at least has a passionate fan base and can put 50k in the stands on a given Saturday.
