If BYU is truly a NC contender, if they go to a G5 conference, they are more likely to end up as a side show act similar to UCF, TCU, Boise, and Utah were when they were G5.

As for current NY6 access, Currently with 6 bowl games there are 1-5 at large berths into the NY6 each year which has almost always guranteed the Top 10 teams all get in to the NY6 bowls. So BYU needs to be #10 or higher ranked and they are in.

Then you have the G5 team ranking between # 8 - #20 , but on average about #16, so even if BYU was 12-1 like Boise or Applachian state, and ranked #19, or #20. There is a good chance that BYU would still be on the outside looking in. (Similar to the '06 and '07 seasons were the inferior WAC conference got BCS bids over BYU during football's best years of my life)

So really, when people say they want in a conference. . . They are basically saying.

- Let's play a weaker schedule with 8-9 Exhibition games against the same Wyoming/UNLV/New Mexico/San Jose/CSU/Fresno/Nevada/Airforce etc.
- Let's not have a schedule with new names and new faces every year.
- Let's play 2 P5 games a season
- Let's not earn our way into the NY6 because we can't win enough games to be ranked #10 or higher.
- Let's earn a whole lot less money.
- Let's have a crappy TV deal where we see less football and a LOT less Men's basketball.

At the end of the day, I think people want to see change and improvement, and while we may not be able as fans to control the wins on the field, we hope that a change off the field will bring about better rankings and bigger wins. I just believe that at the end of the day, we have every opportunity in the world as an independent, we just have not fielded a team that has earned those opportunities yet.

You are delusional if you think a conference game makes it mean more. Alabama fans are currently dissapointed with Nick Saban because his team is 10-0 in the last 10 "exhibition games" and 0-3 in the last 3 games that actually matter.
Bronco was 34-2 against MWC foes not named TCU and Utah. . . Are people really thinking those were important games because they were conference games? (The 2 losses came in his 6-6 seasons)
If we are going to play games that are an almost gurantee win, we might as well play new teams from new parts of the country.
