I find Sanderson to have better character development than Tolkien and less
long songs to read through.
Tolkien is better with the world building, but its kind of unfair to compare a half-finished product vs. a completed magnum opus.
Tolkien's ability with the English language is astounding. Sanderson has good prose, but he isn't Tolkien.
Different feeling in structure and tone to the stories as well.
But honestly, Sanderson was the first author I have read where I finished and felt like I had read something that satisfied me in the same way the LOTR did.

Stick with it! The first part of the Way of Kings was hard for me to get into. The start fakes you out about 3 times
