I agree, every modern day fantasy writer uses some aspects of Tolkien in their works.
Some of it is blatant, others are more subtle.
Hard to compare the two. It’s like the political equivalent of comparing Conservatives from the 1800s to modern day conservatives. They are nothing alike although the modern day one will say their foundation is based on Classical Conservatism.

Stick with it! The first part of the Way of Kings was hard for me to get into. The start fakes you out about 3 times
