There is one specific instance for reading order being important, IMO. That is

to read Warbreaker before reading The Stormlight Archive series - especially before Words of Radiance. It's not to say it's "required", but I believe it will definitely enhance the experience. Some of the crossover characters from Warbreaker play some big roles in The Stormlight Archive, to the degree that I think it really helps to have some background on them.
