There are some aspects of character creation that Sanderson does extraordinarily well, Having them work through circumstances and evolve through that process. In fact, he is incredible at doing this.
However, he does a poor job of fully fleshing out his characters with living breathing traits. I never once think of them as anything, but a story character. While they have dimension in terms of moral complexity, they are still quite flat in terms of personality. They have a couple of attributes that seem to only exist for function.
