It's not an either or proposition. You slowly give kids more and more freedom of choice.
And sure this is anecdotal but I have a neighborhood of older parents that were clamped down during their kids early years and the vast majority all have kids that really struggled in many ways later. The families on average that struggle the most are those that are too permissive or too restrictive. Giving your kid some phone usage at 14 is far different than unfettered access at 10.
