Key is winning high profile games on big stages, high MOVs and forgivable losses
BYU fans are obsessive about this OOC record.
But the perception market doesn’t see it that way.
They see Utah blowing out most of their competition, including #3 Oregon and # 4 USC twice (with one win close) on big stages and then barely losing close games in difficult places like the swamp and Autzen.
(remember how #12 BYU looked in Eugene?)
Those are exceptional, and memorable wins, coupled with forgivable losses.
The swamp, Utah lost at the Florida goal line at the last minute. Utah also had barely just lost Ohio State the year before with the last minute field goal, after Rising went down.
The Penn State loss was uglier, but most of the pollsters and pundits watched and it was neck and neck until rising got hurt.
Utah was ranked 7th going into the season, because of All American talent with Kincaid and Phillips and terrific Starters in Kuithe, Rising and Thomas.
Not one of those guys were on the field when Penn State started pulling away.
That’s a very forgivable loss against a great team.
What BYU fans do though is scrutinize every Utah loss, mitigate every win and ignore the fact that almost every team has embarrassing losses as well.
But most of your complaints are on the bowl games.
It begs the question, Utah was the best bowl team historically in the country until they started playing in conference championship games every year.
In all 4 CCGs their bowl opponent had the extra week of rest while Utah lost significant starters or had players severely dinged up with that 10th conf game.
BYU fans call those excuses, but the rest of college football sees it more objectively.
Big wins, huge margins of victory vs the mediocre opponents and justifiable losses.
Why you see the CFP committee, both polls, and the computers all disagree with your take.
I’m glad they take time to review the games and look beyond just the win loss record.
