In the words of Logan Roy, “you are not serious people”
When someone brings up the “Ohio State back ups” comments, it tells you one of two things:
1) They are just trying to get a rise out of you
2) they actually believe it
The truth is that Ohio State was missing six starters from that game, three on the offensive side, and three on the defensive side. I think it’s OK to acknowledge that.
However, they did play the following people:
- 4 out of 5 of their starting o line
- Their starting all-American and future #2 pick QB
- Their top 2 RB
- Their top TE
- Their top WR in yards and catches
It doesn’t strengthen my argument to point out that they replaced their two wide receivers with the number one WR recruit in the nation from the prior year and Marvin Harrison’s son. Technically, they were still backups.
But the reality is the vast majority of players who sat out that game were simply leaving Ohio State for other opportunities. They weren’t Starters and they weren’t critical depth.
And if someone makes the “backups” point or says “half the team missed the game”, they either know these facts and they are just trying to get a rise out of you, or they are biased and uneducated. They just aren’t serious people. Which one are you Soupy?
