to be the PAC that sends a team to it. It's no more special than any other bowl w/ a conf contract. It lost the "Grandaddy of them all" distiction long ago and is no more special than another NYD bowl. In fact, it's meant even less lately because the PAC has been very weak all the way across. Even for the team going from the B1G, it means less because they typically have their champ in the play-off.
It's why half of tOSU skipped it. Utes still lost w/ tOSU backups. Then last year they had 2 teams in play-off so you got a team even further down the list. Despite all this, Utes STILL LOST by 14 this time. Doesn't even matter by how much. The vaulted actual PAC champ lost to 2nd & 3rd place teams missing half their starters 2 yrs in a row.
Even worse, fans like yourself act like this was some sort of major world-beater accomplishment to just be there sometimes making a case that those losses are more impressive than other teams' wins & plaster roses everywhere. News flash! Your Rose Bowl appearances are no more impressive than an ACC champ who loses the Orange bowl or B12 champ who loses the Sugar. Except sometimes those champs are in the play-off but not the PAC. Do you know who lost those bowls? Of course not. At least I don't because NO ONE cares. They lost.
