You say the church cares so much about how the world views them and I say the
church's position is more closely aligned with the idea they will always be attacked and they are not going to respond to every (or even most) attacks against the church.
Getting involved in issues is a completely different issue than responding to attacks and what you call a PR nightmare. There are two issues here: being proactive in certain areas and responding to "PR nightmares." You appear to think they are one and the same. I don't.
