Okay, my experience
I grew up in Davis County (Ute Heaven) Utah. Many of my friends were ALUFs. I even attended at least one utah game a year with them just to hang out. I always maintained my BYU allegiance but didn't get in too many arguments with them because it always ended the same way. I was a self-righteous zoobie.

I think many of the problems BYU fans have with ALUFs is that there is a legitimate anti-mormon contingent at the U, that they do nothing about. I also attended the U for both my undergrads and I currently work there. Utah was the only medical school in the state, that is the reason why. But, I had at least one or two professors each semester teach something incorrect or outright against the church. And my courses had nothing to do with theology. The majority of my classes were attended by ALUFs and maybe a couple times they stood up for the church. But most the time they just agreed sheepishly.

BTW, I was a proud BYU fan and member and stood up for the church every time it was brought up. I think it actually hurt my GPA in one instance. I know I was considered self-righteous, but I didn't care.

My work experience at the U is completely the same only worse. I have had bosses refer to my garments as "jesus jumpers", and my religion as a cult. There is always trash talk about the church. I truly feel like I live in another state sometimes. But, the funny thing is members are everywhere, in hiding. The church is taboo, even though it is huge part of peoples personal lives. And when it is mocked in the name of college football, it's okay.

I admit there are not any perfect fans on either side. But when I attend games at the U I hate the anti-LDS sentiment. It feels like a small step above a game at Wyoming. The beer throwing stuff can happen anywhere and I haven't really seen it. I know if anything close to that happens at LES, the BYU fans will be the first to throw out there own. At Utah, it is okay.

Seriously, you have to admit your experiences are in the minority. Make your way over to the student section sometime during the rivalry game this year, see how you feel there. Better yet, take your wife over there and see how she feels. There is real hate. That stuff isn't okay.
