In 1982, by brother and I drove from Provo to SLC to see the Cougars pounce on the hapless Utes. In those days, the Cougs were in the middle of a streak of dominance against the Utes. We bought tickets at the door. Again, even against BYU the Utes weren't selling out Rice Stadium in those days. Our seats were low in the end zone. We were dressed to represent in our royal blue attire. We were also quite vocal. Sitting next to us were a couple of Polynesian brothers, dressed in red from head to toe.

During the game, we had a good natured war of words with the Polys. It got quite loud, but not heated. They were adding some sort of happy juice from a bottle in their pockets to their caffinated soda. We were drinking ours plain.. We had a great time until close to the end of the game.

You may or may not remember that BYU won, 17-12. In the second half, Utah was driving for the go ahead touchdown. Remember, they hadn't beat us in a while. On third and goal to go from about the 1 yard line, Kenny Vierra fumbled the football and BYU recovered. Ecstasy soon turned to agony for our Utah friends. In the midst of our celebration, an object came flying from several rows up in the end zone stands. Unfortunately, the object missed its intended targets, (us) and hit our polynesian friends, drenching them in Cola...(I did not test the alcoholic content of the container)

The polys took umbrage at the offense and proceeded to go up in the stands after the perpetrators. We, feeling that discretion was the better part of valor, thought we would beat the traffic to Provo and beat a hasty retreat...

So, I have never had the experience with beer at RES, but I have had a cola thrown in my direction at Rice Stadium..
