I have a friend who is a psychiatrist focused on this issue. Gun access does

increase the success rate of attempts he says— so more suicides per attempt.

In addition, according to him suicide is often a surprisingly spur of the moment thing, and so making it harder to do actually makes quite a difference since people have time to intervene.
