I dont see an either or situation here. We should strive for safety and
Preservation of life from all things

We shouldn't pick something to make us feel better that would possibly have minimal impact on total # of lives lost that could be saved, when there are multiple things that we should also fix or that would have a greater impact..if lives saved is the goal.

We have 15k gun suicides a year. 50k suicides.. why woulent we focia on the 35k? First?
We have 40k car deathe a year. We could reduce that to less than 1000 if tomorrow the speed lomit were switched to 30 mph and all cars had governors.

500k die from cigarettes a year.
Thats 500k "suicides" if you want to be frank..its just a slow suicide.

Close to the same number for obesity deaths.

90,000 alcohol related deaths per year.

More than 70,000 opiod dearhs per year in usa.

Over 350 million guns in usa ,billions of rds of ammo..and ~35K ttotal firearm deaths. 15k of such are suicide as discussed.
Based on some of these real #'s considering as you said. Guns are made to kill...it doesn't seem they are very effective at doing it comparatively. 😉
