One of the issues with access to guns is that they are so easy to use. Kids are

impulsive. A kid that is not suicidal in general but has a bad day, or a bad week can make impulsive decisions when a loaded firearm is sitting right in front of them. Other methods take more planning and research. But a loaded weapon sitting there tempting them is immediate. I have known too many situations where this is the case.
