This is my approach too but it does have a downside

We occasionally read about a teen who saves him/herself or family by getting a parent's firearm and using it against an intruder. I'm sure the probabilities of needing that vs. the probability of something bad happen are not high but still you have to decide in which direction you want to make that tradeoff.
